I cannot even explain the level of bliss I feel right now. I have spend the last week (minus the 3 days I was ill) buying and decorating my balcony so I can have somewhere nice to sit and relax. I pretty much have everything sorted now and today is the first day that I have been able to sit in the sun and blog. It’s a bloody good feeling let me tell ya’! So for today’s post I thought I was do a Tati inspired ‘Hot or Not’. I love watching her videos where she will go over the highs and lows of a brand or a collection, so I thought I would do the same sort of thing with Essence Cosmetics. I have been buying a lot of products from Essence recently, mainly because their low price point.. and I mean low!! But also because they keep impressing me and making me want more. So instead of rambling even more, I am just going to jump right into it…
First of all, let’s talk about concealer. I won’t go into too much detail about this concealer as I have done a full review of this product which you can find by clicking here, but it is of course the Essence Camouflage Full Coverage Concealer. An amazing product. Only £2.50! Also a great dupe of the Urban Decay Naked Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer. Amazing!
Next up we have some setting powders. The first one that I want to talk about is the All About Matt Fixing Compact Powder. Now this powder looks very stark white but it is more of a translucent powder with a slight brightening effect to it. At least on my skin. It is incredibly smooth and sets my under eye area so well. I don’t tend to use it all over my face as there is another powder that I like for this, but I have really been enjoying this for underneath my eyes as it doesn’t look heavy or cakey and just smoothes everything out. I also find that this powder really does help the longevity of my makeup and keeps things pretty matte through the day. I am not the oiliest of skin types so I think that anyone who is more oily will need to touch up with this product but for me it lasts pretty damn well. A definite hot in my eyes.
Another powder that is on the hot list is the Essence Camouflage 2-in-1 Powder & Makeup. Now this powder is the polar opposite to the other powder. This one has some damn coverage! I will say first and foremost that this powder is terrible for under the eyes. This will quickly get cakey under the eyes and look incredibly heavy. If you had an extremely light hand then you might get away with it, but for me it just doesn’t work. I love this powder for the rest of my face however. Whether I am wearing foundation or not, this stuff gives me that bit of coverage to stop my skin looking so dull.
It is a little powdery but very smooth at the same time. I will always set it with a setting spray but even without it does look very smooth on the skin and gives you that flawless pore less look. I use this powder in very light amounts as it can quickly get too much, but I have been using this everyday that I am doing my makeup and it is such a gorgeous affordable product. I also want to point out that I am very fair, and the two lightest shades are still too light for me right now!
Next up we have the Strobing Highlighter. First impressions of this product was that it had the same beautiful tone as the Too Faced Champagne Truffle eyeshadow, and I love using that as a highlight! Dare I say, this highlight was so dull on my skin. Upon swatching it was very powdery yet smooth, but didn’t pack much of a punch.
When I applied it only my skin it gave me a very dull looking gold sheen, but not enough to highlight with but too much to apply as a more glowy face powder. It looked like I had just rubbed a gold satin eyeshadow on my cheeks and I wasn’t enjoying it all that much. This one for me is a miss! It is just very underwhelming.
Next we have another product I have raved about in the past, being the Satin Touch Blushes. Beautiful! I love the finish that these blushes give the cheeks and I think they make you look incredibly healthy.
When I was at an Essence display a couple of months back I also discovered that they do Matte Touch Blushes. First of all, the pattern that is pressed into these blushes is right up my alley! I think it is so beautiful. Not only that, I think I love these just as much, if not more than the Satin touch blushes.. and they are quickly becoming my everyday staples!
If there is one product that I don’t believe in, it is eye primer. I don’t know why, I have tried them before but concealer set with powder does the trick just fine for me, and it means one less product to spend my money on. I saw the I <3 Colour Intensifying Eye Primer and thought for £3 it was worth a shot! Does it intensify colour? No. It gave me a nice base, but this stuff made my eyeshadow crease so badly! I’ll stick with the concealer for now, and this one is a miss for me!
Now time for some mascara! I have purchased Essence mascaras before, and I did enjoy them but I wanted to focus on the Volume Stylist Lash Extension Mascara for this ‘hot or not’ as this is one of their newest mascaras that they have. Again, this is definitely a hot product. It gives heaps of volume at the roots and just fans your lashes out beautifully without becoming spidery or too clumpy. Beautiful.
Now it’s time for some lip products! First of all we have the Essence Matt Matt Matt Long Lasting Lip Gloss. Yes, I get confused at the titling of this product too. At first I thought that it was just going to be a liquid lipstick but it is a bit different from your normal matte liquid lipstick. This to me is a hybrid between a not glossy gloss, or a greasy, non-drying liquid lipstick. It isn’t completely matte but has a little bit of a sheen on the lips and just feels greasy on the lips. On the plus side it is comfortable as it doesn’t get dry but it does have a lot of slip to it which I am not a huge fan of. To me this product is a miss as I’m not even sure that the products itself knows what on earth it is, it’s just doing it’s thing and it’s not for me.
Last but not least we have the classic Essence Lipsticks. I bought the nude collection a good couple of years ago so my lipsticks are probably well out of date, but who honestly pays attention? I have had plenty of time to play with them and test them out, and for the price honestly they are not bad. If you like a creamier lipstick then you may like these, but for me they are a little sheer and a little too streaky for me. You can of course build them up but I much prefer a matte lipstick. They do actually have my perfect nude matte lipstick which I still love but have lost!! As for these ones in particular, they are a miss for me purely because I am not into more creamier lipsticks that have a bit of shine to them. They take a little work but for the price they aren’t at all terrible in my opinion.
I know that was probably the longest post I’ve done in a while, but I wanted to make it worth your while and include as many products as I could. It is safe to say that I have been going a little essence mad lately, and for good reason. I highly feel that a lot of Essence products are overlooked as they are extremely affordable. I’d easily say half the price of your average drugstore prices. I recently bought a couple of foundations to try also so keep an eye out on my Instagram for any updates on how those are holding up! Overall, I love how a lot of these products perform for me with the exception of a couple of products, but like with any brand you can’t love everything as we all have different preferences/skin types. So I hope you enjoyed this overview of Essence Cosmetics, and until next time….
